The design for Dupont is by Andrew Fee, Principal of SOMA Studio, an interdisciplinary firm specializing in residential architecture and design. Andrew's concept was to convert the century-old building into a contemporary loft-like studio / living space and single family home. The complete new-build structure harmonizes with what remains of the original building, a partial foundation and two exterior brick walls.
When complete, Dupont’s 2,867 square foot plan will include a two-storey single-family dwelling with 2,300 square feet of living space, 900 square feet of finished basement and a two-car garage (572 square feet) with self-contained studio apartment above with kitchen and bathroom (572 square feet).
Architectural elements of the main building include a facade which retains the original brick sliced open to house three 20 foot rectangular mahogany windows framed in limestone with a mahogany slab door. The west wall features a two-storey glass atrium cut into the building which will house a small interior garden and second entryway. The atrium opens up what was formerly a dark, narrow passageway allowing natural light in. A south facing curtain wall forms the rear of the building. Looking out onto a private courtyard garden, it features a 17 foot sliding glass door and 8 large mahogany windows.
The main floor living space has a study, custom kitchen with stainless steel appliances, dining room, and a two storey living room with wood burning fireplace. The main floor also features a travertine foyer with fitted closets, powder room and staircase.
The second floor has a cantilevered master bedroom overlooking the two-storey living area below with an ensuite bathroom and dressing area with skylight. A second large bedroom which opens onto the atrium has its own ensuite bathroom. Adjacent to it is a laundry room.
