Andrew Fee's classical education in art and design began with an undergraduate Honours degree in Fine Art from York University, Toronto, and continued with graduate studies under British sculptor Reg Butler at the Slade School, University of London, England.
In 1977 Fee began Workspace, a custom millwork business. This hands-on application of his sculptural and design skills formed the basis of over thirty-five years experience with craftsmanship and the art of working in a wide range of materials. It developed over fifteen years, into a large facility with a international client list.
Fee’s interest in technology, sparked the creation of a second venture - Architectural Ornament, a company whose aim was to design and manufacture innovative plastic building components. But by 1993, he was looking for a new direction. He sold both companies and started to design and build custom homes.
Ten years of design/build lead to specialization in residential architecture and interiors. By 2001 this focus was the genesis of SOMA Studio, an interdisciplinary design company. SOMA’s direction is to design and build contemporary urban infill housing on a project-by-project basis. Currently in production, is the Dupont Project. Follow the building process online on our blog.
Marked by a sculptural sense of proportion and strong understanding of construction techniques, SOMA designs are an insightful response to the way we live now.
