Our Navajo guides drove us on jeeps along the floor of the massive Canyon de Chelly in Arizona. What we were seeing was only a small portion of the vast sacred lands of the Navajo Nation.

We arrived at a spectacular sheer rock face to see the White House Ruin a cliff dwelling nestled high in the rock wall created by the Ancient Puebloans circa 1060 CE. The canyon walls were streaked with "desert varnish", colours caused by deposits of iron and manganese oxide.

My photograph of the "First Ruin" part of the site became the starting point for this design.

CANYON 01

This photograph, taken from a jeep on the floor of the Canyon de Chelley, shows the White House First Ruin pueblo cliff dwelling inside a rock ledge. Shot on a Hasselblad camera with a 120mm lens using C41 colour negative film then digitized using an optical scanner.

SPIRIT of PLACE was a retrospective exhibition of my photographic work at Propeller Centre, a Toronto gallery. The theme of the show was the human and natural forces that shape landscape. Shot in six countries, twelve large-scale, limited-edition, 48" x 34" archival giclée prints on arches paper in colour and black and white, formed the show.
