Our Navajo guides drove us along the floor of the massive Canyon de Chelly on jeeps. What we were seeing was only a small portion of the vast sacred lands of the Navajo Nation.

We arrived at a spectacular sheer rock face to see the White House Ruin a cliff dwelling nestled high in the rock wall created by the Ancient Puebloans circa 1060 CE. The canyon walls were streaked with "desert varnish", caused by deposits of iron and manganese oxide.

My photograph of the "First Ruin" part of the site became the starting point for this design.
