LUNA

100 knot /sq. inch - 8 Colours
100% Tibetan Wool + Chinese Silk
132" w. x 174" l. / 3.35 m. x 4.42 m.
This carpet was designed for the living room area at the DUPONT residence based on my painting of the moon.
During the morning of the December 21, 2010 there was a total Lunar Eclipse in the sky above North America. A stunning montage of press images documented the phases of colour as shadow and light cycled over the moon's surface revealing a palette ranging from cool blue/brown to red, orange and gold all highlighted by a fierce white light from the sun cast against the black night sky.

The design began with my oil painting on board using the press images and other high resolution images of the lunar surface. The painting was then photographed and digitally transformed to create a final pattern for the weavers and a colour chart for the Dye Master in Kathmandu, Nepal.
This photo of a weaver hand-knotting the LUNA carpet shows the printed size-as pattern hanging on the loom at eye level. The weavers will follow this pattern knot for knot. The various colour areas are indicated in wildly contrasting colours like pink and yellow, visible here, to make it easier for the weavers to read the transitions. The balls of custom dyed Tibetan wool stretch across the floor.
