CARPET DESIGN
Ancient Art - New Perspectives

From my first trip to Nepal I was struck by the complexity, beauty and humanity of the world of carpet making. In Kathmandu I found craftsmanship that kept an ancient art alive in a modern context - a multifaceted world of politics, religion and culture intertwined by the weaver's art.
The opportunity to design carpets came from the residential building design and interiors practice I share with my partner Andrew Fee, of SOMA Studio. Our backgrounds in the fine arts and the art of building is reflected in our interdisciplinary approach to design. The enjoyment of working with tactile materials and processes continues to inspire us, so it was natural that I would become passionate about hand-knotted carpets.
I feel inspired and privileged to work with my Nepalese producers who give thousands of hours of artistry and hard work to the making of a custom carpet. The carpet making process involves carding, spinning, dying, and the weaving of one hundred hand-knots per square inch, followed by washing, drying and complex trimming finishes. A 12 square meter carpet can easily have over 1.8 million hand knots.
This is the true art of handmade.

"Each carpet is a creative canvas - many are an exploration of my experiences and interests while others are the result of a creative collaboration with clients. The design process combines my photography, painting and digital graphic techniques inspired by art, history, nature and science.
Today, we visualize the world in startling new ways. From macro and drone photography to satellite imaging we see our planet and the cosmos from a totally new perspective - one that has changed our perception of ourselves."
